ABSTRACT
This study investigated the main drivers and barriers affecting the adoption and implementation of the Environmental
Management System (EMS) ISO 14001 in the food and beverage manufacturing sector in Kaduna Metropolis, Nigeria.
Copies of questionnaire were distributed to managers responsible for safety and environmental departments in selected
organizations. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics in the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS),
and results were presented in tables and graphs. Findings indicated that improved environmental performance (45%),
enhanced public image (24%), competitiveness (9%), and international recognition (9%) were the key motivators for
EMS ISO 14001 adoption. Major obstacles included high implementation costs (34%), lengthy processes (14%),
insufficient human resources (11%), and lack of government pressure or enforcement (10%). The study concludes that
progress in EMS certification remains limited without regulatory engagement and stakeholder awareness.
Recommendations include the government providing technical and financial support to small and medium-sized
enterprises (SMEs) through tax reliefs, capacity building, and policy enforcement to improve sectorial environmental
performance and support national and global sustainability goals.
