Abstract

This paper examined the various challenges affecting accountability mechanisms in the management of poverty alleviation programmes. Lack of accountability is a major threat to a nations political and economic development. This research adopted mixed research design (qualitative and quantitative methods. Structured questionnaire was used to collect information from the respondents. Both primary and secondary data was utilized in the study. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 398 respondents.  Table was utilized in the analysis of data. The study  have indicated that poverty alleviation policies in the study area are either imported or superimposed from international donor agencies and have weak institution. The study also revealed that majority of the respondents agreed that corruption, mismanagement of resources allocated for these poverty alleviation programmes, wasteful public investment and pitiable policy initiatives on poverty reduction and inequality are very common obstacles in the realization of accountability mechanisms; and  the finding showed that corruption and fraud are the major impediment to the implementation or management of poverty alleviation programmes. From the findings, the following recommendations were put forward. There should be established robust monitoring and evaluation mechanisms thereby promoting accountability and transparency; there is also a need to strengthen independent audit or inspection units for quick detection and combat of frauds as well as other malpractices; and leverage on technology;
