ABSTRACT

The provision of potable water is essential for the growth and development of any geographic region; however, a shortfall exists in the quality and quantity of this all-important commodity in most communities in Nigeria. This study investigated the quality of some sachet water brands in Kaduna North Local government area. Twenty bags of 50cl sachet water were collected from ten different brands and their physical, chemical and bacteriological qualities were investigated. The collected samples were analyzed using the Wagtech Field Kits. The laboratory results of analysis were tabulated against the Nigeria Standard for Drinking Water Quality (NSDWQ) and the World Health Organization (WHO) permissible limits. The results obtained for the physicochemical parameters show that turbidity had values from 0.3-1.83 NTU, Electrical conductivity, 1.23-242us/cm, pH, 6.53-8.34, TDS, 9.18-104 ppm, Hardness, 34-72.9ppm, Alkalinity, 10-105, Chloride, 14.5-34.37. The result of the analysis of the physical and chemical parameters conformed to the established standards of the WHO and NSDWQ. Conversely, the bacteriological analysis results show that all the recorded values were within the Nigerian permissible limits but with variations in values for some samples slightly above the WHO permissible limits for Total Coliform bacteria. It is recommended that appropriate treatment procedures for drinking water be employed in the production of quality sachet water for consumption, and regulatory agencies should also carry out regular unannounced surveillance visits to assess the level of compliance of sachet water companies to standard production procedures.
